How to Find Your IMEI Number

The IMEI is a 15-digit number that identifies your phone. You need it to order an unlock code, to report a lost or stolen phone, or to check a second-hand phone before you buy it.

The quickest way: dial *#06#

Open the phone’s dialler, type *#06# and the IMEI appears on screen. This works on almost every mobile phone. Dual-SIM phones show two IMEIs; for an unlock, give us the first one.

In the phone’s settings

  • iPhone: Settings > General > About, then scroll to IMEI.
  • Android: Settings > About phone, sometimes under Status or SIM status.

Without switching the phone on

  • Look on the original box, near the barcode.
  • On many iPhones the IMEI is printed on the SIM tray. On older phones with a removable battery, it is on a sticker under the battery.

Keep your IMEI private

Only share your IMEI with businesses you trust, such as your network or an unlocking service. Never post it publicly online.

Ready to unlock? Browse our unlock codes, or read our guides for iPhone and Samsung.

Frequently asked questions

Is the IMEI the same as the serial number?

No. The serial number is set by the maker, while the IMEI is a mobile network identity. Unlocking services and networks always ask for the IMEI.

Why does my phone show two IMEIs?

Dual-SIM phones have one IMEI per SIM slot. Either identifies the phone, but most unlock services ask for the first one, often labelled IMEI 1.

What if *#06# does nothing?

Make sure you type it in the phone dialler, not a messaging app. If it still does not work, use the settings menu or the box instead.

Can I check an IMEI before buying a used phone?

Yes. Ask the seller for the IMEI and check it with an online IMEI checker to see whether the phone is reported lost, stolen or blocked.
